Susan Richardson created this for our September contest, using a photo by Fernando de Sousa. Several other entries used the same photo (and thanks to everyone who entered the contest!) but we judged this to one to be the most successful. Congratulations, Susan!
There were six winning entries in all. The others will appear over the coming weeks.

Oh! Wonderful. I wish I didn’t know how horribly, evocatively accurate.

This poem’s language is evokes incessant cawing and flapping, the need to escape. Wonderful blend of words and image.

I saw one a while ago. I was walking my tots to school, or back from it. Back from it, I think. And one swooped from a nearby tree and landed on the carcass of a pigeon in the middle of a road, and picked at it with its beak and picked at the red meat. And it looked just like this picture and answered to these words. My kids asked me questions about it all the way home.

Thanks to you all for your comments. I’m a poetry postcard novice but definitely have the urge now to create some more!
